Venice to Croatia Bicycle Tours

Venice to Croatia Bicycle Tours by Hotels

Three countries in one week between Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia

Venice, the fascinating lagoon city often praised as the place of desire, is the starting point of this bike and hotel tour. “La Serenissima“ was one of the most important European sea-and trading powers of the 18th century.

Cycling tours along the Adriatic coast offer great opportunities to enjoy this beautiful ocean. Over the course of the week you will cycle to the foothills of the Julian Alps and through vast fertile plain lands rich in water. You will pass Slovenia with the fascinating seaport town of Triest and as you approach the Istrian peninsula the landscape becomes hilly and you are greeted by small artist’s villages, deep valleys and vineyards. Carefully selected 3 and 4 star Hotels ensure that you can begin the cycling tours rested and strengthened. Our reliable transport driver will take your luggage from hotel to hotel.

After checking into your hotel you have enough time to explore the lagoon city with its numerous canals, cultural squares and cosy cafes. You might allow yourself a ride in one of the famous gondolas, winding their way through the maze of the canals, or the luxury of drinking a cappuccino on the marketplace square.

Day 2    Mestre – Jesolo/Caorle

(aprx. 25/40 mi or 40/65 km)

You take the ferry boat to Venice passing the square of St. Marcus and on to Punta Sabbioni, which is located on a peninsula opposite to Venice. Now it is time to take your bike along the coast to Caorle, often called “Little Venice“, or continue cycling to the famous swimming beach of Jesolo. The bicycle tour offers beautiful views and beaches invite you for refreshing swim stops.

Day 3    Jesolo/Caorle – Portogruaro

(aprx. 38/25 mi or 60/40 km)

Today you leave the ocean behind and cycle northwards in the direction of the foothills of the Julian Alps. You cross landscapes rich in water in the form of rivers, lakes and connective canals. Today’s overnight-stay is in Portogruaro, once a major river port in times of the Republic of Venice. The old town of Portogruaro, characterized by the Venetian Gothic era, is almost completely intact and well worth an evening stroll.

Day 4    Portogruaro – Palmanove/Aquileia

(aprx. 40 mi / 60km) or (43 mi or /70 km optional travel by train)

Depending on your mood you have the possibility to shorten today’s tour by taking a train from Portogruaro to Latisana (12 mi./20 km). The tour leads you along the border between the regions of Veneto and Friuli, through historical landscapes, past rivers, canals and ancient Roman towns. The night can either be spent in in Aquileia with its lovely Roman heritage, or in Palmanova, also known as the “Star City “, due to its geometric construction.

Day 5    Palmanova/Aquileia – Trieste

(aprx. 43 mi / 70 km) or (31 mi  / 50 km optional travel by train)

Today you cross the river Isonzo by bike, previously the setting of several major battles during the First World War. In the afternoon you head in the direction of the sea, where you have various possibilities to take a short break: Duino, with its two castles, or, Sistiana, with its characteristic bay, are two of many possibilities. Again you have the opportunity to shorten the route from Monfalcone to Trieste by train (30 km/19 mi.). Here, in the old harbour of The Hapsburgs Empire, you have the chance to partake on an extensive city tour.

Day 6    Trieste – Piran – Portorož

(aprx. 28 mi / 45 km)

After only a few kilometres you leave Italy and cross the border to Slovenia. You cycle through well-known villages such as Koper and Piran, famous in Slovenia for its Venetian characterised old town. Shortly before the Croatian border you reach today’s destination: Portorož, most accurately described as the capital of Slovenian tourism.

Day 7    Portorož – Poreč

(aprx. 34 mi / 55 km)

Your tour takes you through the salt flats of Secovlje, southwards, and before long you cross the border to Croatia and reach Istria; the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. Over hill and dale, passing small villages and coastal artists towns, you continue to draw closer to your final destination; Poreč. Here you encounter the Euphrasian Basilica, a World Heritage Site, whose visit should not be missed.
